i have naturally black hair and i'm planning to dye the bottom layer of my hair to a light brown for the first time.
is there anything i need to know?
i might as well get it done at a salon, but if it's too pricey i'll do it at home.
i have had my hair permanently straightened but that was a year ago and my hair is still strong i guess.

Hey,
Get a box of Stargazers 40 volume peroxide %26amp; bleach (kit) which you can get for around $10 (or a similar kit, but make sure you get 40 volume, it is the strongest).
You should get a brush in the kit, so mix the bleach up and brush it on to the part of the hair you want to lighten.
Leave it for an hour and keep checking it every 15 minutes or so to make sure nothing terrible is happening!
Then have a box of store bought 'toner' eg any box color that you want your hair to ultimatley be and when your hair has reached a light enough shade from the bleaching, dry it, and then apply the toner color either later that day or the next day. If you have acheieved a light enough shade with the bleach, you should find that the toner goes on top nicely and gives you the shade you desire.
I have done this many times for clients in their homes. It can be trial and error but remember ANYTHING can be fixed. Leave yourself enough time to correct before a big social event! If anything goes too wrong remember you can always put a dark color back on top!

Get it done at a salon, because it has to be bleached first and there's a LOT of room for error on that! Once that part is done, you can probably renew the dye yourself at home...

i'd go to a salon.
if it goes wrong you'd only wished you had gone.
